Fetlock Radiology

Technique
The study of the fetlock is performed with the horse well positioned on a horizontal surface. Between six and eight months of age, there is fusion of the distal epiphysis of the third metacarpal, while the binding of the proximal epiphysis does not occur until the year. The sesamoid bones are not mineralized to three months.

Projections
In the projection palmaromedial dorsolateral oblique 30° and the dorsomedial-lateral oblique Palmaro 30° (30° DLPMO/DMPLO 30°) the chassis is placed obliquely against the palmar surface. The beam at 45 ° above the mid-sagittal plane and 30 ° to the horizontal. This view is useful to assess the state of the sesamoid bones. Their palmar surfaces are smooth and rounded edges, while axial and abaxial surfaces are uneven, with areas of insertion of ligaments.
In the oblique projection palmarodistal dorsoproximal 45° (45° DPrPDO) the chassis is placed in the palmar / plantar and the beam, at 45° with respect to the horizontal. In this view we can see that the medial condyle is slightly wider than the side.
In the extended lateromedial projection (LM) put the chassis against the medial aspect of the tip and the beam parallel to the ground in the direction of the joint. In this view we will assess the quality of the joint.
